Welcome to Torbay tourist information tourist guide for Brixham.
Brixham is the smallest of the three towns that make up the holiday
region of Torbay. Brixham & Torbay have over 22 miles of coastline
to explore. Entertainments close by include Churston go carts, Broadsands
beach, Goodrington theme park with Quay West water rides, Woodlands
park and Cayman short hole golf to name but a few. Dartmouth and
England's oldest town Totnes are a short bus or car ride away and
both Paignton & Torquay are within easy commuting distance.
Brixham is famous for its fresh fish and the town is host to a number
of fish restaurants and eateries.
Brixham has a number of beaches including Breakwater Beach located
near Brixham harbour, this is a pebbly beach, ideal shallow paddling
for the kids, going out to deeper water for scuba diving. A beachside
restaurant, which serves A La Carte seafood amongst other dishes
(open evenings too, great views), and a beach cafe for takeaway
snacks, etc. This is a popular beach for diving activities. There
is a decent sized car park right by the beach.
There is a charming smaller beach and cove at Fishcombe, this has
to be reached on foot.
A favorite beach is at Sholestone - this is situated just beyond
breakwater beach. Here, you will find a terrific salt-water outdoor
swimming pool, right by the edge of the sea - and it's free. Its
supervised by lifeguards, and you can hire sun beds and deckchairs.
The beach is served by a refreshments kiosk with outdoor tables
and chairs.
There is a lovely cove at Mansands beach, which is gained from Higher
Brixham - you will have to leave your car at the top of the cliffs
and walk down to the beach and there is a picturesque cove at Scababbacombe
beach - this is part nudist (the far end). Again, you need to leave
the car at the top of the cliffs and walk.
There are dozens of other beaches, small and large, outside of Brixham
at Goodrington, Paignton and Torquay all are within an easy drive
or can be accessed via the number 12-bus route. In fine weather
a ferry operates between Torquay, Paignton and Brixham.
For Golf enthusiasts Churston golf course is a short car journey
away and there are a number of municipal courses in Torbay and surrounding
areas. If you enjoy walking and nature Dartmoor Country Park can
be accessed by coach or car and Paignton zoo is on the main Paignton
to Brixham road.
Wherever you go in Brixham, there are reminders of the old days.
Walk around the narrow streets behind the Tourist Office and see
something of the area long ago, or visit Brixham Heritage Museum
to look at the tools used in building the ships, models and pictures
of them and a reconstruction of a fisherman's cottage living room.
In summer, you will be invited to Cowtown carnival, but you won't
find this address on the street map. Its name is a reminder of times
long ago when Brixham was two separate communities, with only a
marshy lane to connect them. Cowtown was where the farmers lived,
at the top of the hill, while, about a mile away, the seamen made
their homes near the harbour in Fishtown.
Brixham has much to offer today's tourist and local populace alike.
